Review: Lexmark X7350
Those looking for a moderately priced AIO would do well to check out Lexmark’s X7350 printer. It’s practically identical to its big brother, the Lexmark X8350, save for a few fancy accoutrements such as memory card slots and a color LCD. Even without these, the X7350 delivers virtually all of the features you could want in an all-in-one (AIO) printer for the home. Just make sure you can live with the quality of its text and photo output.
The X7350 has officecentric features, including the ability to work as a standalone copier and fax machine; a 50-page automatic document feeder (ADF) mounted in the flatbed lid makes quick work of faxing, copying, or scanning multipage documents. Even better, the X7350’s software lets you fax from your PC and send e-mail by automatically opening a message in your e-mail program and attaching a scanned document. Besides being business-savvy, the X7350 even includes a PictBridge connector for printing directly from cameras.
Sadly, the X7350’s text output was well below par, even for an ink jet. Graphics quality was easily good enough for most personal or internal business needs, but only in high quality mode. I did see obvious banding in default mode and, as with many printers, thin lines had a tendency to disappear.
Most photos I printed (using six-color printing) qualified as true photo quality. I did see some flaws, including a loss of the subtle shading which lends objects a sense of three-dimensionality. In addition, these photos were easy to smudge with moist hands, even after drying for days, but that’s typical of ink jet–based printers.
In the end, the main argument for considering the Lexmark X7350 is its long list of features. In particular, if you want an ADF and standalone fax capabilities, you won’t find them in many AIOs in the X7350’s price range. And if the output quality is acceptable for your purposes (which it should be for most personal and business use), its officecentric features are enough to make the X7350 a solid choice, not to mention a pretty good bargain for the price.
